Men's Soccer Ties Notre Dame College in Exhibition Play
April 8, 2009
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's soccer team played host to top-ten NAIA team Notre Dame College on Sunday afternoon in spring season exhibition play.
Notre Dame started out aggresively, pressing Xavier. As a result, Notre Dame created a number of good chances. Freshman keeper Ryan Engelmann was up to the task in net, turning away the Notre Dame attack. After about 25 minutes, the tide began to swing and XU created a few good opportunities, but no goals.
After a poor clearance, Notre Dame capitalized with a goal from the corner kick in the 40th minute. After the break, XU dominated play with possession and energy. Junior Jake Vollmer had a strong change to score in the 50th minute when he broke through on the left side, only to be denied by a diving save from the ND keeper.
The pressure finally paid off in the 80th minute when sophomore James Getzen served a cross from the right side that was headed out by the defense to Vollmer at 30 yards. He took one touch to settle and then fired a shot that hit the crossbar, then down the post into the back of the net.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie. Xavier's next match is Friday, April 17 at 7 pm vs. the ALUMNI. All Alumni interested in participating should contact Dave Schureck.
