Xavier Upends Defending National Champion Indiana
April 5, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Xavier's Matt Walker converted on one scoring chance and lifted the Musketeers to a 1-0 spring exhibition victory over the defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers on Friday night.
It was the first spring goal for Walker who helped the Musketeers to their second-straight shutout victory over a tough opponent. Last Thursday Xavier defeated Louisville 1-0 on the road.
Walker's goal came in the 23rd minute and was unassisted as he ripped a shot from 25 yards out for the score. The midfielder led the team with three shots on goal and five total shots on the night. Will Walker, his twin brother, had the only other shots taken by XU.
Goalkeepers Vince Shaw and Eric Osswald combined for the shutout for the second-straight game. Shaw made one save in the starting role and Osswald stopped four shots in 58 minutes of action.
Friday's meeting was the first between the clubs that squared off in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers won that game 4-1 on their way to winning the national title.
Xavier returns to the pitch next Saturday as it faces Akron, the 2010 National Champion. Match time is set for noon in Akron.
