Men's Soccer Defeats Wilmington 3-0

CINCINNATI - Joe Fleckenstein scored the game-winner and Jimmy Cummings added two assists to lead the Xavier University men's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout victory over Wilmington on Saturday evening at the XU soccer Complex. With the win, Xavier improves to a spotless 3-0-0 this spring.
Fleckenstein's game-winner came 11 minutes into the contest. Cummings beat a Wilmington defender down the right side and struck a cross through the penalty area and Fleckenstein first-timed the ball off the far post and into the back of the net, giving Xavier a lead it would not relinquish.
Cummings notched his second assist of the match in the 26th minute. Cummings got free on the right side again and lofted a ball into the 18 where Matt Wheeler out-jumped the Wilmington defense to head the ball home.
Willmington's Alex Vander Slijs was awarded a penalty kick after a Xavier foul in the 61st minute, but Diederich made a diving save to preserve the shutout.
Xavier out-shot Wilmington 17-to-5 on the evening.
The Musketeers will be back in action on Saturday, April 1st when they welcome Cincinnati State and the University of Indianapolis to the XU Soccer Complex. Xavier will square-off with U of I at 5:00 and with Cincinnati State at 7:30. Indianapolis and Cincinnati State are scheduled to play at 6:15.
