Men's Soccer Fights Past Duquesne 3-1
Nov. 9, 2007
CINCINNATI - Freshman Brandon Bucher, Andy Dimbi and senior Chris Miliano all scored in Xavier's 3-1 victory over the Duquesne Dukes. Xavier improves to 7-10-1 (3-4-1 A10) while Duquesne falls to 5-10-3 (3-5-0 A10). The match was marred by four cautions and a red card, the results of a physical game that included two skirmishes. Duquesne's Bryan Matthews, Ryan Slaby, and Pat Flinn all received yellow cards, followed by Flinn's ejection from the field of play after a fierce kick to Ricardo Sutherland's legs. Xavier senior Jon Enders also received a caution. Duquesne's Drew Jeffery opened the scoring with a goal over a sliding Adam Sokolowski who came out to challenge the play. The goal, scored in the 31st minute, was Jeffery's third of the season. The Musketeers would counter in the 38th minute when freshman Brandon Bucher, after several failed attempts, burried his fifth goal of the season off a breakaway to tie the game. Not a minute later, fellow freshman Andy Dimbi bent a beautiful set piece try over the Duquesne wall and off the left post into the goal for the game-winning goal. The goal was Dimbi's second of the season. Xavier was not finished. Senior Chris Miliano, assisted by Tommy Clines and El-Hadji Dieng, rocketed a shot past Duquesne keeper Chris Torres to score his first goal of the season and the Musketeers' third of the game.
Torres and Xavier goalkeeper Adam Sokolowski both finished with six saves for the game, including an acrobatic Sokolowski save in the 61st minute to keep the Dukes in check. The shot totals were heavily in Xavier's favor by a 24-14 margin. Xavier and Duquesne amassed 30 fouls between them (18 and 12, respectively). Xavier will return to the field on Sunday, November 11th, to face the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. As this marks the final home game of the season, the Musketeers will celebrate Senior Day and bid farewell to the seniors. |
