INDIANAPOLIS - The Xavier men's soccer team had its six-game winning streak snapped after dropping a 2-1 decision at Butler on Friday night.
With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 10-6-2 overall (6-3-0 BIG EAST), while the Bulldogs improve to 10-7-1 overall and 4-5-0 in BIG EAST play. The loss also dropped XU to the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. Butler, on their Senior Day, secured a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament and guaranteed another matchup with Xavier.
The Musketeers scored first in the 34th minute off a header from senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) and went to half ahead by one score.
Butler scored the tying goal in the 49th minute when Vincent Mitchell took a double-assist from Zach Steinberger and Jeff Adkins and scored from five yards away. BU's second goal, which proved to be the game-winner, came in the 65th minute when Brandon Fricke took a free kick from Adkins and scored.
Butler goalkeeper Jon Dawson picked up his ninth win of the season, while Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) took the loss and registered three saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
The third-seeded Blue and White will return to the field on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when they host No. 6 Butler in the first round of the six-team BIG EAST Tournament. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex.
