PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) scored in the 87th minute to lift the Xavier men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win at Villanova on Saturday afternoon to extend their winning streak to six games.
“This was a great road win against a team that posted four wins (all shutouts) in their last five outings,” said head coach Andy Fleming. “Villanova’s size and direct style wasn’t a great matchup for us and for the most part we could not play the style that we wanted to. Our back four and goalkeeper were on top of their games today and Tanner (Petrick) had a strong two-way game for us.”
With the win, the Musketeers improve to 10-5-2 overall (6-2-0 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats fall to 8-9-1 overall and 3-5-0 in BIG EAST play. The win also gives XU their fourth consecutive 10+ win season and keeps the Blue and White in the chase for the league title as well as a first round bye as one of the top two finishers.
“We will wait and see how the chips fall with other conference games and will regroup on Monday with possibly a BIG EAST Championship to play for on Friday,” stated Fleming.
Nova scrambled fiercely to try to get the equalizer, but the Blue and White effectively defended the last of VU's four corner kicks on the day and ran out the clock.
Villanova finished with a 14-6 advantage in shot attempts, while Xavier had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) picked up his 10th win and sixth shutout of the season, while registering seven saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
The Musketeers will wrap up the regular season on Friday, Nov. 8 (7 p.m.) when they head to Indianapolis to take on the Bulldogs of Butler.
