RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Matt Walker scored twice and junior Adar Cohen recorded three assists for the No. 12/11 Xavier men's soccer team that bounced back from its first loss of the season with a convincing 5-1 victory over Richmond on Sunday at Robins Field.

It was Walker's second two-goal game of the season for the Musketeers (11-1-4, 4-1-2 A-10) who avenge a tough loss to VCU on Friday. Cohen became the first Musketeer in over five years to record three assists in a match.

The Spiders (6-11-0, 2-6-0 A-10) added a late goal to deny Xavier the shutout victory.

"Today was a great bounce back performance by our program," head coach Andy Fleming said. "This started late Friday night and continued during our training sessions and meetings on Saturday. We had a sense of purpose, took chances and had great performances from our seniors. It was a little upsetting to allow a goal in the 87th minute but we certainly left Friday in our rearview mirror."

Walker tallied his goals in the 54th and 63rd minutes for the Musketeers, giving him seven on the year to go along with eight assists. He slipped his first goal to the right post and beat the Spiders' goalkeeper in close quarters for his second.

Cohen had an assist on Walker's second goal to go along with helpers on goals from sophomore Garrett Halfhill and senior James Queree in the first half.

Halfhill put Xavier in front in the seventh minute with a header for his first goal of the season. Queree also scored on a header in the 19th minute for the Musketeers who went into the half leading 2-0.

Senior Luke Spencer closed out the scoring for Xavier on a blast from 15 yards out. It was his 11th goal on the year for the Musketeers.

Sunday was the second time this season that the Musketeers have tallied five scores in a match. The other came against Thomas More on Sept. 27.

Houston Oldham recorded the only goal on the afternoon for the Spiders.

Xavier held advantages in shots (25-11), shots on goal (12-3) and corner kicks (13-1). Fouls were also in favor to Xavier (8-7). Walker came off the bench to lead Xavier with six shots and three shots on goal. Oldham and Timmy Albright each had three for Richmond.

Musketeer goalkeeper Justin Marshall earned the victory. He made two saves in the 75 minutes of action. Richmond's Chris Grover made seven stops in 90 minutes or work.

Xavier returns home for its final regular season matches of the season next weekend. The Musketeers host Rhode Island on Friday and Massachusetts for Senior Day on Sunday.
