CINCINNATI - Hawk forward Colin Baker scored the game's lone goal with eight-seconds remaining in the first overtime as the Xavier University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at the XU Soccer Complex in Cincinnati. With the loss, Xavier drops to 6-10-0 on the year and 2-4-0 in Atlantic 10 action. The Hawks improve to 5-8-0, 4-1-0.
The Musketeers out-shot SJU by a 20-to-14 count and had several opportunities to punch in the game-winner during the first overtime, holding a 6-to-2 edge in shots during the extra session.
XU's best chances came with under three-minutes left in OT. Freshman midfielder Andy Dimbi shook off a couple Hawk defenders and served a ball into the box and found freshman back Jeffrey Lyman. Lyman hit a header that seemed ticketed for the back of the net but SJU back Travis Gast jumped and headed the ball over the crossbar and out of harm's way.
Baker's goal came on a counter attack. Baker got behind the XU defense and flipped a shot by Xavier keeper Adam Sokolowski for the game-winner.
Sokolowski made two saves for Xavier while Bryan Benedict stopped three shots for Saint Joe's.
The Musketeers will return to action on Thursday, November 3 when they travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
