No. 12/11 Xavier Handed Its First Loss Of 2012 By VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - The No. 12/11 Xavier men's soccer team was handed its first loss of the 2012 season by Virginia Commonwealth, 4-1, on Friday night at SportsBacker Stadium.
The loss snaps the Musketeers (10-1-4) 14-match unbeaten streak which was the longest in program history. Junior Matt Walker tallied his fifth goal of the season in the loss.
Xavier fell behind in the 9th minute as Mario Herrera Meraz who scored on a shot from 25 yards out to beat the Musketeers' goalkeeper to the right corner. VCU produced its second goal off a corner kick in the 24th minute to take a two-goal advantage. Jason Johnson was able to get his foot on the corner to send it into the upper right portion of the net.
The Rams took a 3-0 advantage out of halftime in the 50th minute on a Devon Fisher goal off a rebound.
Walker put Xavier on the board in the 61st minute with his breakaway goal. He beat the keeper to the right for the lone score of the night for the Musketeers.
Kharlton Belmar added the fourth goal of the evening for the Rams in the 76th minute.
Despite the score the shots battle was fairly even, with VCU holding a slight 12-11 advantage. The Rams also had five shots on goal compared to XU's four. It was a fairly clean game with only four fouls being called on the Musketeers.
Sophomore Matt Hill led the Musketeers with two shots on goal. Johnson had three total shots to pace the Rams' attack.
Xavier goalkeeper Justin Marshall was credited with the loss and was lifted after VCU's third goal. He made one save in 56 minutes of play. VCU's goalkeeper, Andrew Wells, made only two saves in the victory.
The Musketeers close out their road trip with a match against Richmond on Sunday. Kickoff has been pushed up to 11 a.m. from Robins Field due to pending weather conditions created by Hurricane Sandy.
