CINCINNATI - Sophomores Jake Vollmer and Ricky Sutherland scored the game-tying and game-winning goals less than one minute apart late in the second half to propel the Xavier University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over league foe Temple on Friday evening at the XU Soccer Complex in Cincinnati.  With the win, Xavier improves to 6-9-0 on the year and 2-3-0 in A-10 play.  The Owls slip to 4-7-2, 0-3-1.

The win also enhances XU's record in Atlantic 10 home openers to 8-3-2 all-time.

With the win, Xavier improves to 5-1-0 on the year at home and is 9-1-1 in its last 11 matches at the XU Soccer Complex.

With Temple leading by a 2-1 count, Vollmer controlled the ball on the right side and struck a 35-yard bullet with his right foot that started outside the left post but dove to the right and snuck inside the far side to knot the score up at two with 18:19 remaining in regulation.

Sutherland took advantage of the Musketeer momentum when he scored the game-winner with 17:28 on the clock.  Freshman forward Brandon Bucher took a shot from inside the box that was saved by Temple keeper Tony Pratico.  Pratico was unable to corral the rebound though and the ball ricocheted towards a charging Sutherland who knocked the ball into the back of the net.

Bucher, who also scored a goal earlier in the game, finished the night with three points and tied classmate El-Hadji Dieng for the team lead with 10 points.

Vollmer's goal was the first of his career while Sutherland's score was his third of the season.

XU was out-shot by a 9-to-7 count in the first half but came out and controlled the match in the second stanza, out-shooting Temple by a decisive 14-to-4 margin.

Junior goalkeeper Adam Sokolowski made two saves in net for Xavier while Pratico stopped four shots for the Owls.

The Musketeers return to action on Sunday when they welcome Saint Joseph's to Cincinnati.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex.
