Oct. 16, 2005

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Joe Dolan scored his second career goal with 31-seconds remaining in regulation to knot the game up at one and the Xavier University men's soccer team hung on for a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon at Richmond. With the tie, XU remains at .500 in the Atlantic 10 at 1-1-2 and moves to 2-8-3 overall. Richmond moves to 4-4-5, 0-1-3.

Dolans's goal, which was his first since the 2002 season, came at 89:29. Junior midfielder Joel Gunnarson struck a cross from the left side of the box to Dolan who headed the ball from the right wing inside the far post.

That goal knotted the game up at one thanks to a Richmond goal scored by Scott Loesser at 41:22. Loesser controlled a ball from Kyle Richards and slipped one past XU goalkeeper Liam Curran.

Curran allowed only one goal for the third time in the last four games and made four saves on the afternoon. Eric Sciocchetti made six saves for Richmond.

The Musketeers held a 16-to-14 advantage in shots including an 8-to-5 edge in shots on goal. XU also out cornered the Spiders by a 7-to-3 margin.

Sophomore Matt Wheeler had a chance to give XU the win when he fired a shot from inside the box with only 12-seconds remaining in the second overtime, but the shot was kicked off the goal line by a Richmond defender.

The Musketeers are back in action on Friday, October 21 when they take on Fordham. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex.
