CINCINNATI - Freshman Brandon Bucher scored his third goal of the season but it was not enough as the Xavier University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on Friday evening at Rhode Island.  With the loss, Xavier slips to 4-7-0 on the year while the Rams improve to 3-6-1.  The match was the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both squads.

The loss was XU's first in a conference opener since 2004.

Bucher gave XU the lead at the 39:53 mark.   He took a feed from sophomore Kennedy Nakwa and took advantage of URI goalkeeper Chris Pennock's poor position and found the back of the net, giving Xavier a 1-0 edge heading into the break.

The assist was Nakwa's second of the year.

The lead was short lived though as Lukasz Tumicz scored the equalizer at 59:45.  The goal was Tumicz's sixth goal of the season and came when her struck a shot from outside the right-hand side of the box into the upper left-hand corner past a diving Adam Sokolowski.

Xavier would hold URI at bay until Geoffrey Cameron scored the game-winner at 80:13.  He took a feed from Danleigh Borman and hit a header over Sokolowski.

Sokolowski made a career-high nine saves on the night while Pennock allowed a goal on the only shot on goal he was challenged with.  URI held a 27-to-8 advantage in shots.

The Musketeers are back in action on Sunday, October 14 when the team travels to Amherst to take on UMass at 1 p.m.
