Men's Soccer Secures First BIG EAST Victory With 3-0 Win At DePaul
Oct. 9, 2013
CHICAGO – Behind solid defense and goals from three different players, the Xavier men's soccer team picked up its first BIG EAST win with a 3-0 shutout at DePaul.
With the win, the Musketeers improved to 5-5-2 overall (1-2-0 BIG EAST) and handed the Blue Demons (4-6-2, 0-2-1 BIG EAST) their second consecutive loss. The victory was huge for the program as it was XU’s first BIG EAST victory and first BIG EAST road win.
“A few things come to mind with regards to today's result,” said head coach Andy Fleming. “It’s our first ever BIG EAST win and was done at an extremely tough place to play where few opponents have success.
“To score three goals and record a shutout is wonderful for our players and came as a bit of a surprise,” stated Fleming. “We had a few guys leave the game with injuries and really had to tinker with our lineup on several occasions. I thought that we played well in spurts, creating several point blank scoring chances down the stretch after what was an even first half.”
The Blue and White got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute when freshman Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit) rebounded his own shot and sent it into the center of the DePaul net from close range. Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) won the ball off the DePaul centerback and played Brown in for a breakaway against the DePaul goalkeeper. The DePaul keeper made the initial save but Brown followed his own shot and finished the rebound.
The two teams played even until the 77th minute when sophomore Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) scored on a header after assists from redshirt senior Tanner Petrick (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview/Tulsa) and senior Gino De Paoli (Highland Village, Texas/Marcus). Off a free kick from about 35 yards out, De Paoli found Petrick, who served a ball into the box to Lathum. Latham then beat his man to the ball and flicked it on past the keeper.
Less than four minutes later, Matt Walker tacked on another insurance goal at the 80:07 mark from eight yards out.
Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) picked up his fourth shutout of the season and registered five saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
Despite being outshot by DePaul, 20-17, Xavier won the shots on goal battle (9-5) and corner kick battle (5-0). The 3-0 loss was the first time the Blue Demons have given up three goals in a match since a 3-2 overtime loss Sept. 8 at Wisconsin.
The Musketeers return to action at the XU Soccer Complex on Saturday, Oct. 12 (7 p.m.) when they host No. 9 Georgetown, before heading to Queens, N.Y. to face No. 22 St. John’s on Saturday, Oct. 19 (7 p.m.).
