CINCINNATI - The No. 17/14 Xavier men's soccer team finished the first weekend of its Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with a solid 2-1 victory over visiting Butler on Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.

The Musketeers (9-0-2) received scores from sophomore Andrew Jordan and senior James Queree, who followed up a free kick service with the game-winning goal after the Bulldogs (2-4-4) evened the match.

Xavier remains one of the seven unbeaten teams in the nation and record its second-straight win over a league opponent to begin conference play for the first time since 1998.

Butler controlled possession for the first 20 minutes of play but lacked any threatening scoring chances in both teams second game in three days. The Musketeers trailed in shots before making substitutions that opened up play midway through the period.

Jordan was one of those subs and netted his third goal of the season in the 43rd minute. He was on the receiving end of a well-placed crossing pass from junior Matt Walker, who marked his sixth assist of the season on the play. Jordan made an unchallenged run to deposit the pass and give the Musketeers the goal advantage going into halftime.

The Bulldogs challenged the Musketeers with scoring chances in the second half, but benefited from a deflected shot and poor clearance to even the score in the 77th minute. Jordan Burt corralled the soft clearance in empty space and let loose a right-footed shot into the upper left corner.

As has been the case much of the season Xavier responded quickly with the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute.

Queree serviced a free kick from 40 yards out that found junior Nick Hagglund near the far post. The defender headed the ball across the box to the streaking Queree, who cleaned it up with an easy chip for his first goal of the season.

Xavier ran out the clock with lengthy possessions to earn the victory in the first conference meeting between the two teams since 1994.

Musketeer goalkeeper Justin Marshall (9-0-2) made an outstanding save on a free kick to keep Butler off the board prior to its goal. It was the only save he was required to make in the victory. The Bulldogs' Jon Dawson (2-4-4) made five saves in the loss.

Advantages in shots (12-11), shots on goal (6-4) and fouls (15-5) were had by the Musketeers.

The Musketeers will close out their five-game homestand on Friday as they welcome rival Dayton. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
