CINCINNATI - Freshman forward El-Hadji Dieng scored his third goal of the season and sophomore Ricky Sutherland added the game-winner to lead the Xavier University men's soccer team past Western Kentucky by a 2-1 count on Saturday evening at the XU Soccer Complex in Cincinnati. With the win, Xavier improves to 4-6-0 on the year while the Hilltoppers fall to 1-7-3.
Junior goalkeeper Adam Sokolowski made four saves in net for XU including a diving stop with under four minutes remaining in regulation to preserve XU's 2-1 edge.
Dieng's goal came at 22:12. Junior back Tommy Clines controlled the ball in the midfield and served it towards a streaking James Getzen along the near side. Getzen dribbled into the box and tapped the ball to Dieng who redirected it past a diving Kyle Schroeder and into the back of the net.
Sutherland's much-needed insurance tally came when he rocketed a shot from inside the box that fit inside the upper-right hand corner of the goal.
The Hilltoppers cut the Xavier lead in half at the 79:56 mark when Sam Drummond slipped by the XU defense and tapped a shot past Sokolowski from deep inside the box.
Schroeder allowed both of Xavier's goals and was replaced by Pat Rickman in the second half. Rickman stopped two shots for WKU.
XU out-shot WKU by a 15-to-14 margin and held a 7-to-5 edge in shots on goal.
Xavier improves to 8-1-1 in its last nine homes matches dating back to last season.
