PITTSBURGH – The Xavier men’s soccer team (4-4-2) wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh (0-5-2) Tuesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Since starting the season 0-3, the Musketeers are now 4-1-2.
“The guys did well to bounce back tonight on the road against a tough team,” said head coach Andy Fleming. “Pitt has played their last four games against the likes of BC, NC State, Wake Forest and Maryland and are battle tested. While I’d be remiss to say we didn’t dodge some bullets, I also thought we had pretty good command of the game for most of the second half. Not finishing off the shutout leaves a sour taste in our mouths, but I thought we did what we had to do to pick up this non-conference win.”
Xavier got on the board first in the 8th minute when freshman Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit) was able to kick home a cross from junior Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) to give the Musketeers a quick 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Blue and White grabbed a two goal advantage off a corner where they used some great passing before senior Nick Hagglund (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) and Todd Pratzner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS) teamed up to find junior Garrett Halfhill (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) for his first goal of the season.
Pitt was awarded a penalty kick in the 77th minute, which would have cut into the lead, but it was sent just wide of goal.
The Panthers broke up the XU shutout with a goal from Kevin Murray in the 86th minute and pressed hard for an equalizer in the final four minutes of the game but Xavier was able to hold off Pitt to pick up the 2-1 non-conference victory.
Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) picked up his fourth victory of the season and registered four saves in 84 minutes in goal.
The Musketeers will now hit the road for a pair of BIG EAST matches. XU will face Creighton (Oct. 5), before heading to Chicago to take on DePaul (Oct. 9).
