CINCINNATI - Marquette's goal in the 31st-minute proved to be the difference on Saturday night as the Xavier men's soccer team dropped its BIG EAST Conference opener to the Golden Eagles, 1-0, at the XU Soccer Complex.
Marquette improved to 5-2-1 overall (1-0-0 BIG EAST) and ended the Blue and White's (3-4-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) five-match unbeaten streak.
Xavier dropped their first match since falling to Northwestern on Sept. 7 and are now 1-4 in their last five league openers.
MU's C. Nortey created his own opportunity when he split a pair of Xavier defenders with his first touch off a pass from teammate Coco Navarro. Nortey side-stepped another tackle and launched a strike from the top of the 18-yard box, finishing top-shelf.
The Musketeers tested Marquette's defense in the final seconds of regulation, but were unable to turn back-to-back corner kicks into a potential equalizer in the final minute of play.
Xavier goalkeeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) took the loss but registered three saves on the night.
The Musketeers will hit the road for their next three matches. XU will face Pittsburgh in non-conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 1, before battling BIG EAST foes Creighton (Oct. 5) and DePaul (Oct. 9).
