Men's Soccer Uses Late Second-Half Goal To Knock Off Kentucky
Sept. 14, 2013
CINCINNATI - In a rematch of the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, senior Gino De Paoli (Highland Village, Texas/Marcus) netted a goal in the 68th minute to give the Musketeers a 2-1 win over Kentucky in front of spirited crowd of 1,036 fans at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
With the win, Xavier improved to 2-3-0 on the season, while UK fell to 2-2-0 on the year. The win also gives Xavier their first win in Cincinnati against the Wildcats in series history (UK is now 4-1 in Cincinnati), but UK still leads the all-time series, 6-5.
The Blue and White carried the momentum from Tuesday night's 2-0 win over UC Irvine, who upset No. 16 Louisville on the road Friday night, into their matchup with the Wildcats. Xavier struck quickly, scoring just three minutes into the match. After intercepting a UK pass on their attacking end of the field, XU then formed a quick counter attack on the far sideline, with sophomore Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) crossing it into the box for Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia), who finished it for his third goal of the year and second goal in as many games.
UK answered in the 41st minute, as Tyler Riggs and Jacob Scearce combined to create a run down the sideline, resulting in a Kentucky corner kick. Charlie Reymann lofted the corner from the near side into the middle of the six-yard box, finding the head of Kaelon Fox, who found the back of the net for his first career goal.
After battling for the next 26 minutes, Xavier was able to take the lead for good in the 68th minute, as the Musketeers had a run down the near sideline that led to a cross into the box from Walker. The ball sailed through the traffic in the box and UK barely missed on a clearance attempt, with the ball finding De Paoli at the edge of the six-yard box. The senior fired a shot that sailed across the goal mouth and into the net at the far post, past the diving UK keeper.
Xavier keeper Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) improved to 2-1-0 on the season and recorded three saves in 90 minutes between the pipes, while UK goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale made one save in his 90 minutes of action. UK finished with a 12-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Musketeers return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17 when they host Cedarville at the XU Soccer Complex. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
