Men's Soccer Shuts Out UC Irvine For First Win Of The Season
Sept. 10, 2013
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes to pick up its first win of the season with a 2-0 shutout of UC Irvine.
"I'm very happy for and proud of our guys," said head coach Andy Fleming. "In the last couple of days I feel like we have put ourselves in a position where we were ready and prepared to win. We definitely responded well with a two-day turnaround from Saturday night. We've played three straight shutout halves (1 vs. Northwestern, 2 vs. UC Irvine) and we are looking forward to building on the success from tonight."
Xavier improved to 1-3-0 overall and handed the Anteaters (2-1-1) their first loss on the season. The win was huge for XU, not only because it was the first of the season, but also because it came against an opponent that has won 66 games dating back to the 2008 season (average of 13.2 wins per year). Since the 2011 season, the Musketeers have gone 15-2-2 over their last 19 home contests.
The scoreless match was broken in the 78th minute when senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) tallied his second goal of the 2013 campaign.
Ten minutes later Walker found freshman Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit), who capitalized on a breakaway in the 88th minute to put the match out of reach.
The Blue and White's offense would finish with six shots, including a trio of shots on goal, compared to UCI's eight shots (four shots on goal). Senior Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) recorded his first shutout as a Musketeer and tallied four saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
The Musketeers will try to pick up their first winning streak of the 2013 season when they host the Wildcats of Kentucky at the XU Soccer Complex on Saturday, Sept. 14 (7 p.m.).
