Sep 7, 2013
CINCINNATI - Two first half goals by Northwestern helped the Wildcats defeat the Xavier men's soccer team, 2-0, in non-conference play on Saturday night.
Joey Calistri netted a pair of goals on the night. The first goal came just a minute into the game when Grant Wilson found a streaking Calistri, who beat the XU defense to the ball and knocked a shot into the upper left corner of the goal to give NU the quick 1-0 lead. His second goal came in the 22nd minute when he scored off of a rebound, which came after Brandon Medina's shot was blocked by a Musketeer defender.
Xavier drops to 0-3-0 overall, while Northwestern improves to 2-1-1 on the season. The loss also snaps XU's 13-match home unbeaten streak. Prior to tonight's loss to Northwestern, Xavier was 11-0-2 in their last 13 home contests. Dating back to the 2011 season, the Musketeers have gone 14-2-2 over their last 18 home contests.
The Blue and White's offense would finish with 10 shots, including a pair of shots on goal, compared to Northwestern's 11 shots (three shots on goal).
Xavier had several opportunities for goals in the second half, with a trio of shots sailing high and narrowly missing the goal
The Musketeers will try to pick up their first win of the 2013 season when they host the Anteaters of UC Irvine at the XU Soccer Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 10 (7 p.m.).
