Xavier Upends IUPUI On The Road To Continue Winning Streak

Matt Walker tallied two second-half goals and Gino De Paoli scored his first goal of the season for the Xavier men's soccer team that downed IUPUI, 3-1, on the road Wednesday night to push its unbeaten streak to four games to begin the season.

The Musketeers improve to 3-0-1 with the win and the Jaguars lost their fourth straight and are now 1-4-0.

The Musketeers came out red hot firing off five shots and earning five corner kicks in the first seven minutes of the game. De Paoli's goal came in the ninth minute when junior Nick Hagglund and sophomore Darin Kruzich strung together touches to find him inside the penalty box. It was De Paoli's seventh-career goal.

Xavier's tempo was paced until the Jaguars scored the game-tying goal in the 66th minute. Kyle Hyland scored on a header from a corner kick marking the first goal that XU has conceded to IUPUI in its five-game all-time series.

Five minutes later the Musketeers regained the lead when junior midfielder Matt Walker netted his first goal of the season. Walker received a pass against the flow from De Paoli. Senior defender Sean Ryan also received credit for his first assist since 2010.

He came back in the 76th minute to add an insurance goal to secure the victory for the Musketeers. Walker had a shot from 10 yards out after receiving a pass from Kruzich. It was his first-career two-goal game and the second for the Musketeers in three matches.

For the second-straight match the Musketeers earned 10 corner kicks. Xavier took a season-high 21 shots in the game to IUPUI's 14. Shots on goal were in XU's favor, 7-3.



Sophomore midfielder Will Walker had five total shots and Queree had two shots on goal to lead the team. Hyland's three shots were the most for the Jaguars.

Senior goalkeeper Justin Marshall (3-0-1) played 90 minutes for the Musketeers and made two saves. His counterpart, Ryan Onwukwe, also played the length and made three saves.

Xavier returns home on Sunday to take on Milwaukee (3-1-0). That match kicks off at 1 p.m. at the Xavier University Soccer Complex and can also be seen live on GoXavier.com.
