MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The No. 22 Xavier men's soccer team closed the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic with a 1-0 loss to tournament host College of Charleston at Patriots Point on Sunday afternoon.
The Musketeers (0-2-0) played extremely tough on the afternoon, despite limited substitutions and being on short rest from an exhausting double overtime effort against Furman on Friday night.
The Cougars (1-1-0) picked up the game's only goal when Tanner Clay played a ball through the XU back line to Xavier Rajpaul, who took it in and beat sophomore goalkeeper Vince Shaw (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) to his left-hand side across the goal mouth in the 13th minute.
The remaining 77:00 of the contest was balanced and contained largely in the central third of the field, but CofC did have to hold off a strong Xavier attack to preserve the shutout.
Senior Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) earned a spot on the All-Tournament team after recording two assists and a goal on the weekend.
After playing its first two regular season games away from home, Xavier will now return to the XU Soccer Complex to open a four-game stretch The Musketeers will start the homestand on Saturday, Sept. 7 against No. 19 Northwestern. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
