Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Cincinnati, 1-0
Aug. 29, 2008
CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati forward Branden Stelmak scored at the 11:46 mark and XU was unable to answer as the Xavier University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to UC on Friday evening at the XU Soccer Complex. The contest was the season opener for the two crosstown rivals.
Stelmak scored the contest's lone goal when he cleared some space just outside the box and struck a bullet inside the near post and just under the crossbar past a diving Adam Sokolowski.
Xavier had several good scoring chances, none better than El-Hadji Dieng's with 18-minutes remaining in the second half. Dieng found himself in the open field and dribbled into UC's defensive third. He entered the box on a good angle and rifled a shot that seemed ticketed for the back of the net but a diving Matt Williams punched away the shot and preserved the 1-0 lead.
Earlier in the second half, junior back Jake Vollmer took a free kick from 10-yards beyond the box. He had Williams beat but the shot sailed just inches high of the crossbar and out of harm's way.
Senior net-minder Adam Sokolowski made three saves in net for the Musketeers while Williams stopped four shots en route to the shutout.
UC out-shot XU by an 11-to-10 count and the teams combined for six yellow cards 34 fouls in this rivalry game. Four of the last five Crosstown Shootouts have been decided by one goal.
The Musketeers are back in action on Friday, September 5 when the team travels to Radford. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
