FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The No. 22 Xavier men's soccer team defeated Loyola (Chicago) Friday night, 2-1, in its final exhibition game of the 2013 preseason. The game was played in Fort Wayne, Ind. as part of the Shindigz National Soccer Festival.

"It was imperative for us to get a good result tonight, based on how the past few days have gone," said head coach Andy Fleming. "We progressed in a few areas but remain a work in progress and still have a ways to go to put us where we would like to be. My initial vision for this team was to be ready by the regular season game number three and I'm confident we will make that benchmark."

The Musketeers used a pair of goals in a five-minute span to take control of the game. Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) struck first for Xavier in the 30th minute and Matt Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) would find the back of the net five minutes later to extend the XU lead to 2-0.

The Ramblers would not go away without a fight. Brian Bement brought Loyola within one when he was on the receiving end of a cross from Brian Lunar in the 39th minute.

Xavier will now turn its focus to the beginning of the 2013 regular season. The Musketeers will open the season at the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S.C. XU battles Furman on August 30, followed by a matchup with the host Cougars two days later.
