CINCINNATI - Xavier used a first half goal from Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) and a second half strike from Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit) to best Cedarville 2-0 on Thursday evening at the Xavier Soccer Complex.
With the win XU moves to 3-0-1 on the spring campaign which includes a 285 minute shutout streak.
Cedarville, a member of NCAA Division II, has won 31 games over the past two seasons and went toe to toe with Xavier in a 1-1 tie this past fall.
“Cedarville’s a solid opponent whom I have a lot of respect for,” said head coach Andy Fleming. “They compete, are athletic and are well coached. They are a tough out and are competitive with many Division I programs, as we saw last fall. I thought the tempo they demanded from us was high and we grew as the game went on. Above all, we applied teaching points throughout the game and from our halftime talk and looked gritty, technical and athletic for several stanzas of the game.”
Walker put XU on the board late in the first half when he headed home a driven cross from Matt Hill (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore). Xavier went on to generate a handful of quality chances in the second half.
Brown added insurance in the 78th minute when Jacob Smith (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School HS) ran down a ball and dribbled into the Cedarville end, hitting Walker Andriot (Shelbyville, Ky./Martha Layne Collins HS), who threaded a setting ball to Brown for the one-time finish. In goal Eric Osswald (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty/USF) shared the shutout with Matt Appel (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) and Jake Ciricillo (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS).
Xavier will finish of its spring campaign on Saturday April 26 at 730 when they face Akron. This game is part of the Down Syndrome Awareness Classic and all gate proceeds will go towards Devin’s Team and the 2014 Buddy Walk. For information contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
