CINCINNATI - Xavier used two early second half goals to extend a 1-0 halftime lead en route to a 3-0 blanking of Thomas Moore on Friday, April 4.
The win moved Xavier to 2-0-1 on the spring. Thomas Moore, from nearby Crestview Hills, Ky., competed in the NCAA Division III tournament this past fall.
"We made progress tonight," said head coach Andy Fleming. "I thought our younger players played well but felt a few seniors underperformed a bit. Owen (Steinwall) and Kyle (Martin) had strong two way efforts."
Garrett Halfhill (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) tallied two goals to lead Xavier, while Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) added another. Halfhill who scored just one goal this fall leads the Musketeers with three goals and an assist in the spring campaign. Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit) and Walker Andriot (Shelbyville, Ky./Martha Layne Collins HS) contributed assists.
"We now have ten training sessions and two matches left," said Fleming. "We will need to keep our foot on the pedal and not look past a good Cedarville team as we move towards Akron. My challenge to the players is to finish the spring, show progress and remain a bit uncomfortable and nervous about making sure we grow in the next two weeks and are ready for that challenge in the Akron match."
Ranked amongst the nation's top 15 programs in wins, MLS picks, conference titles and 10 win seasons (2010-2014) Xavier hosts Cedarville this Thursday at 8pm at Xavier. They will then once again participate in the Down Syndrome Spring classic against Akron on Saturday, April 26 730pm at the Xavier Soccer Complex.
