CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's soccer team opened up its 2012 spring schedule on Thursday evening with firepower, scoring a combined six goals in matches against Thomas More and Centre at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
The Musketeers began the night by beating Thomas More 3-0 and followed it up later in the evening with a 3-1 win over Centre.
"Tonight was a solid first outing for us overall. In the first game nothing surprised, impressed, nor disappointed me," head coach Andy Fleming said. "We played well in spurts and then it also looked like it was our first time playing.
"In the second game we moved the ball as well as I've ever seen and scored one very impressive goal. Centre employed high pressure and an offside trap throughout the game, which are both areas where we have struggled in the past. We handled both very well and showed signs of progress in those areas."
Junior Luke Spencer and sophomores Gino Depaoli and Nick Hagglund scored for the Musketeers in the win over Thomas More. DePaoli scored again in the victory over Centre, as did sophomore Matt Walker and freshman Darin Kruzich. Xavier was denied the shutout over Centre, who scored with 57 seconds left in the match.
Xavier will travel to South Bend, Ind. on April 14 to face Notre Dame. The clubs last faced in the 2011 fall exhibition season and settled for a 1-1 draw. Xavier led the contest on a late goal but Notre Dame scored with under a minute left to tie the contest.
"Next week's demands will triple and the dial gets turned up as we face a talented and hungry Notre Dame team," Fleming said. "We will look to have a good week of training and see if we can take another step forward next weekend in South Bend after a much needed four days off."
