Men's Soccer Blanks UIndy, 2-0
April 2, 2014
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men’s soccer team used an early goal in the ninth minute and another insurance goal later in the game to beat the University of Indianapolis, 2-0, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Xavier soccer complex.
With the win the Musketeers move to 1-0-1 on the spring season. U of I plays in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and competed in the 2013 Division II NCAA Tournament.
Kyle Martin (Perryville, Mo./St. Louis Priory) and Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) tallied the goals for XU, the first for each in the spring exhibition season. The teams played three thirty minute periods and Xavier was able to use each of their three goalkeepers and all of their field players.
“A bit of an odd outing for us,” said head coach Andy Fleming. “We listed six goals for the game and hit on the first five. The final one was a sense of progress, which we all agreed we didn’t seem to check off and thus it fely like an empty day. I thought we were too loose in our details and too detached as a team on both sides of the ball. We were lucky to not get punished a few times and clearly did not look like a top team today.”
Fleming cited the performances of Todd Pratzner (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS), a freshman who missed the second half of the 2013 season due to injury, Owen Steinwall (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) and redshirt goalkeeper Matt Appel (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) for their strong showings. Appel made two strong closings on balls behind the defense in the second period. Jacob Smith (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School HS), a redshirt freshman who missed the entire fall due to surgery, saw his first collegiate action, while Rhodes Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Will Walker (Batavia, Ohio/Batavia) also returned from surgeries for their first action of the spring.
Xavier, ranked in the nation’s top 15 for wins, NCAA berths and consecutive 10 win seasons over the past four years, continues its spring slate on Friday, April 4 against Thomas Moore, a 2013 Division III NCAA Tournament participant, at 7:00 p.m.
