PONTIAC, Mich. - Owen Steinwall’s (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) header off a knocked down corner kick with twelve minutes remaining in the second half allowed Xavier to pick up a 1-1 tie with Oakland last weekend in the spring exhibition opener for the Musketeers.

The game was part of the Ultimate College Soccer Challenge at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Mich., which also featured 2013 national champion Notre Dame, Michigan and host Oakland.

“Like most of the first half’s in the first game of a spring season I thought we were timid and had some rust,” said head coach Andy Fleming.” However aside from a soft goal allowed, we were very sharp in our passing in the second half and I thought we made a big jump performance wise. We missed an open goal and a point blank header in the final five minutes and could have walked out with a win. We not only did well to equalize, but to keep the pressure on Oakland after our goal.”

After a save off of a headed corner kick, the ball found to Steinwall, who headed it into the goal knotting the score at one with 12:00 left in the contest. Just minutes later Calum Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) had a quality shot on goal blocked and Jalen Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebuf Jesuit) lost his footing after the goalkeeper had been eliminated via a cross. In the final minute Garrett Halfhill’s (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) header off a set piece soared just over the crossbar.

Ranked in the nation’s top 15 for wins, NCAA berths and consecutive 10 win seasons over the past four years, Xavier returns to action Saturday, March 29 taking on the University of Indianapolis at XU Soccer Complex at noon.
