
Men's Golf in Fifth After Smith's Hot Start
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The Xavier men’s golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the Falcon-Antigua Invitational.
Senior Tim Smith (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) is setting the pace for the Musketeers after shooting an opening round 3-under 69. Smith is just one stroke back from a three-way tie for first place. Junior Miles Maillet (Bishop, Calif./Union) is tied for 13th overall after shooting a 1-under 71 on Friday. Sophomore Neal Grusczynski shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 29th heading into Saturday. Xaviers final two golfers, junior Matt Makinson (Coquitlam, B.C./Centennial Secondary) and freshman Andy Pope (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glen Bard West), both shot rounds of 76 on Friday and are tied for 55th. As a team, Xavier posted a 1-over 289 for the day, placing the Musketeers fifth overall and eight strokes behind the first round leader Utah.
