Makinson Wins B.C. Amateur in Record Fashion
VICTORIA, B.C., CANADA --- Xavier University sophomore Matt Makinson shot the lowest round in tournament history and held on for a two stroke victory at the B.C. Amateur Championship last weekend. Makinson's third round , six under par, 64 was the best score in the tournament's 99 year history, a feat that has not gone unappreciated by Makinson. "To break a 99 year old record is something I never thought about doing, but its great," Makinson said. "Although I would take the win over the record any day, the record is certainly icing on the cake." He added that although he expected to do well in the tournament and entered the third day as the leader, Makinson didn't know that Saturday would be a special day until midway through the third round. "When I birdied 11, 12 and 13 it really got me going," Makinson said. "I was in the groove. I didn't even have to think. This performance should show everyone that we (Xavier) have what it takes to win." Makinson, the 2001 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, who tied for fourth in the 2001 Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament is expected to be one of the leaders for Xavier's Conference Title defense. "He should battle for number one this year," Xavier Men's Head Coach Doug Steiner said, "His performance in B.C. is pretty big because it makes Xavier golf known internationally."
