Musketeers Reload for Championship Defense
CINCINNATI --- Neal Grusczynski, Kenton Hobbs and David Noe have signed letters of intent to play golf at Xavier University, Head Coach Doug Steiner announced Monday. Steiner is reloading a team that won the 2001 Atlantic 10 Championship and advanced to the first ever NCAA Regional in school history. "This is one of the top recruiting classes ever to come to Xavier," Steiner said. "They each have the ability to contribute as freshmen." Grusczynski of West Allis, Ill., a recent graduate of West Allis Central H.S., was a two-time Greater Metro Conference Player of the Year. He recently competed in the Illinois State Amateur and the U.S. Amateur Qualifying Tournament, but he first caught the eye of Steiner when he shot a Hole-in-One in Austin, Texas. "The first time I ever saw him hit a ball he had a Hole-in-One." Steiner said. "I said to myself, 'That's the kid I want.'" Grusczynski, the son of Steve and Debbie Grusczynski of West Allis, will major in business. Hobbs of Bedford, Ind., a recent graduate of Lakota West H.S. in West Chester, Ohio, led his team to the 2000 Ohio State Championship by placing second in the State individually. He was also the 2000 Greater Cincinnati Golfer of the Year and the Fall Sports Men's Athlete of the Year while leading his team to the Greater Miami Conference Tournament Championships. "It's great to have a local player." Steiner said. "He is a good student as well as a great golfer. He should be a big contributor." Hobbs, the son of Kirk and Cynthia Hobbs of Bloomington, will major in accounting. Noe of Monroe, Mich., a recent graduate of Monroe H.S., was an Honorable Mention All-State performer in 1999 and a two-time Regional Player of the Year. He has recently been ranked as high as second in the state of Michigan as an amateur while playing in the National Junior Amateur. "David brings national playing experience to Xavier," Steiner said. "He is a great player with a swing that should develop to make him a solid collegiate player." Noe, the son of Margie McIntyre and Bob Noe of Monroe, will major in business. The three will begin classes in Fall 2001 at Xavier.
