Future on Display at NCAA Golf Final Round

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. --- Xavier sophomore Matt Makinson (Coquitlam, B.C./Centennial Secondary) shot a team-best 71 in the final round of the NCAA Golf Championship East Region at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Colonial Williamsburg.

Makinson, one of three Xavier sophomores on this year’s NCAA Tournament team, tied for the team-best three day total with a 6-over 222.

Senior co-captain Jeff Marr (Lexington, Ky./Tates Creek) shot his third straight 74 on Saturday to also post a 222 over the three-day tournament. Marr’s classmate and co-captain Tim Donovan (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) shot a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish the tournament with a 224.

Sophomore Tim Smith (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) shot a final round 76 to close with a 230 for the three rounds. Classmate Bryon Harger (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) ended the three days with an 80 to total 236.

As a team the Musketeers shot a 6-over 294 in the final round. Xavier’s three-day total of 26-over 890 placed the Musketeers in a tie with Louisiana State and Seton Hall for 20th place in the tournament. The top 10 teams advanced to the NCAA Championships later this month.
