CINCINNATI --- Xavier University sophomore golfer Korey Ward (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) has been selected to participate in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship May 16-18 in Columbus, Ohio. Ward will compete in the 54-hole regional tournament at the Ohio State University Golf Club Scarlet Course. There will be 13 teams and 10 individuals competing at the regional at OSU.
This will be the third straight year and the 10th time in 13 years that the Xavier men’s golf program has sent an individual or the team to an NCAA Regional. This marks the third straight year and the fifth time in seven years that a Xavier men’s individual golfer has been selected for the NCAA Championship.
Ward, an All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection, finished fourth as an individual in Xavier’s last event of the season, the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship in Coral Springs, Fla. Ward posted three Top Five finishes in 10 tournaments as a sophomore, while recording a 71.8 scoring average.
Ward won the Marshall Invitational, placed third at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Hawaii, and was 11th at the Cobra PUMA Invitational in Florida. He finished under par for 10 rounds this year and under par for four tournaments, shooting season lows of 65 in the first rounds of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate and Cobra PUMA Invitational.
Last summer Ward was the U.S. Amateur Qualifier medalist with a 7-under-par 133, including a Camargo Club course record 62 in the final round. He was a Top 10 finisher at the 2012 Ohio Amateur Championship and won the 2011 Ohio Amateur. The Lakota West grad also captured back-to-back state tournament titles in 2008 and 2009.
