Kokrak Turns in Record Effort at A-10 Championship

First Round Results (PDF)

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- After completion of 27 holes of golf at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, sophomore Jason Kokrak and Neal Grusczynski sit atop the leader board while the Musketeers are in first place with a 25-stroke lead over second place George Washington. Xavier fired a 286 (-2) in the opening round and has shot a 3-under par 141 through nine holes of the second round amid 40-degree temperatures and 25 mile per hour winds on the par-72, 7,244-yard Newport National Golf Club. The Musketeers completed nine holes in the second round due to the weather forecasted for Saturday.

Kokrak began the day in impressive fashion by recording an eagle on the first hole en route to shooting a 5-under par 67 in round one. Kokrak’s 67 is the lowest round in the history of the A-10 Championship since the tournament moved to Newport National in 2004. The 67 also ties the course record set by PGA Tour Professional Bret Quigley. The sophomore is 3-over par after nine holes in round two.

Neal Grusczynski fired a 1-under par 71 over the first 18 holes and Freshman Andy Connell turned in an even-par 72. Grusczynski moved into a tie for first with a 1-under par 35 through nine holes of the second round while Connell is at an even-par 36 to move into third place.

John Streibich shot a 76 (+4) in round one and is 1-under-par through nine holes in the second round. Defending A-10 Champion Andy Pope fired his worst round of the season with an 83 (+11) in the opening round, but has bounced back thus far in the second round as the junior is at 1-under par 35 through nine holes of round two.

The Musketeers will attempt to complete the second round on Saturday at 8:00 a.m., but the weather forecast includes a 90 percent chance of precipitation along with strong wind gusts.
