Men's Golf and Women's Tennis Finish Second in A-10
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. --- The Xavier men’s golf team fell three strokes short in its bid to repeat as Atlantic 10 Conference Champions, finishing second to Rhode Island in this weekend’s league tournament at Penn National Golf Club.
Meanwhile, the women's tennis team was runner-up to Richmond in the A-10 Championship tennis match in Washington, D.C.
During Sunday’s rainy and cold final round at the golf championship, the Musketeers shot a 289 and were unable to make up any ground on the front-running Rams. XU had cut its deficit in half on Saturday by shooting the low round of the tournament with a 280.
Sophomore Matt Makinson (Coquitlam, B.C./Centennial Secondary) was the second individual overall in the tournament. He carded a 4-under 68 on Sunday to finish with a 7-under 209, one behind the tournament medalist.
Makinson, last year’s Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, earned All-Conference honors for the second year in a row.
Freshman Neal Grusczynski (West Allis, Wis./Central) succeeded Makinson as Rookie of the Year after placing fourth in the 2002 Championship with a 4-under 212. Grusczynski had rounds of 70 and 69 before closing with a 73 on Sunday.
Grusczynski was also a member of the All-Conference Team.
Tim Smith (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) tied for 11th with a 1-over 217. Miles Maillet (Bishop, Calif./Bishop Union) rounded out the Xavier scorers with a 4-over 220 for the weekend.
