Men's Golf Tied For Second After Day One at UK
The Xavier men's golf team fought off the jet lag from its return trip from Hawaii to shoot a 6-over 290 in Friday's first round of the Johnny Owens Invitational at the newly refurbished University Club in Lexington, Ky.
The Musketeers are tied with Eastern Kentucky six shots behind the leader and host Kentucky Wildcats.
The second round was suspended on Friday afternoon as storms moved into the Lexington area. The round will resume at 7 a.m. Saturday. The third round will also be played on Saturday to keep the Invitational as a 54-hole tournament.
Miles Maillet (Bishop, Calif./Bishop Union), who has won two of the three tournaments the team has entered this spring and is the reigning Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week, led the Musketeers with an even-par 71 in Friday's first round.
Tim Smith (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) is tied for ninth at 1-over 72.
Freshman Neal Grusczynski (West Allis, Wis./Central), the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, is tied for 15th at 2-over 73.
Bryon Harger (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) is just one shot back at 3-over 74 to be tied for 26th.
Matt Makinson (Coquitlam, B.C./Centennial Secondary) is tied for 46th with a 5-over 76.
Saturday's play will begin at 7 a.m., earlier than scheduled, in order to complete the tournament before nightfall.
