CINCINNATI-- The Francis Xavier Homan Golf Center at Maketewah Country Club will officially open on Apr. 13 with an invitation-only ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Xavier Director of Golf and men's golf coach Doug Steiner is excited about having such a prestigious club as its home golf course and a dedicated practice facility near campus for both the men's and women's golf programs.

"This elevates both programs nationally, both in terms of player development and recruiting," said Steiner. "Both teams get a chance to practice on a world-class golf course and we have the ability to practice year-round no matter the weather thanks to this state-of-the art practice facility. The partnership between Xavier, the golf programs and an elite private club like Maketewah Country Club make this project even more unique and exciting."

"On behalf of the Club's membership and staff, we are pleased to welcome the Xavier University golf teams to our new indoor golf practice center" said Maketewah General Manager Charlie Carpenter.  "With this wonderful new year-round facility, we look forward to watching the teams and our members take their games to the next level."

Maketewah Country Club was willing to be a partner in the process in addition to providing the land. Its proximity to Xavier's campus and its uniquely golf-centric atmosphere gave Xavier the perfect opportunity to engage with another member of its community. Maketewah, a Thomas Bendelow/Donald Ross design, has been in existence since 1910 and is widely recognized as one of the top clubs and courses in the region.

The new 10,000 square foot facility will serve the Xavier men's and women's NCAA Division I golf teams.  It is equipped with a 3,000 square foot indoor putting and chipping green, Xavier golf offices, Xavier's men's and women's locker rooms, an executive board room, a Maketewah member lounge, and four heated hitting bays which open onto a best-in-region short game practice area.

In addition, this is the first regional Cobra-Puma fitting center. Bob Philion, the president of Cobra-Puma, played on Xavier's men's team from 1989 - 1993. Its Maketewah site will offer club fitting and product demos.

Current donors, former Xavier team golfers, those who have given to Xavier golf in the past, and Maketewah officials have been invited to the Grand Opening. John Kucia, administrative vice president of Xavier, will welcome the guests, as well as Bill Toerner, president of Maketewah Country Club, Tom Elfers, coach of the Xavier women's golf team, and Doug Steiner. This year's men's and women's teams will be introduced. Following the brief ceremony, tours will be offered.
