MADISON, Wis. - Matt Gerard (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) carded a 3-under 69 to sit in second place and the Xavier men’s golf team is tied for third place after day one of the 2013 Badger Invitational played at the University Ridge Golf Course.

Caleb Sturgeon of South Carolina tied the 18-hole University Ridge men's collegiate course record and the Badger Invitational record with a 7-under par 65. Gerard is in second with a 3-under 69. Seventeen players shot under par in the first round.

South Carolina leads team scoring with a 6-under 282. USC Upstate is four strokes back at 286. The Musketeers, Missouri-Kansas City and Illinois State are tied for third with a 1-under 287.

Yuki Kato (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) registered a 2-under par 70 and is tied for 8th place after the opening round. Korey Ward (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Tanapol Vattanapisit (Rayong, Thailand/The Pendleton School) are tied for 38th after shooting 74s on Sunday.

John Burger (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) rounded out the Musketeer scoring and sits tied for 52nd place, carding a 76 after the first 18 holes.

The tournament continues Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 with 18 holes daily. Tee times begin Monday at 9 a.m. and a shotgun start is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
