Men's Golf Places Ninth At Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Xavier men’s golf team wrapped up its third tournament of the fall season with a ninth-place finish at the 2013 Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic at the Warren Golf Course.
XU carded their best round of the tournament on Tuesday (289) and finished with an 885 (291-305-289). Houston (282-283-282/847), led by individual champion Kyle Pilgrim (71-71-66/208), were the lone team to finish the even under par (-5) and took the team title by 15 strokes. Michigan State (284-294-284/862) and Yale (291-289-287/867) rounded out the top three.
Junior Korey Ward (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and senior Yuki Kato (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) led the Musketeers, finishing in a tie for 21st place, individually. Ward shot a two-over 73 in the final round, while Kato closed out the two-day event with the best round for an XU golfer during the tournament, a 1-under 70.
Tanapol Vattanapisit (Rayong, Thailand/The Pendleton School) carded a two-over par 73 on the way to finishing tied for 30th place. The junior finished the event with a 222 (75-74-73).
Matt Gerard (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Matt Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS) rounded out the Musketeer scorecard, as they finished in 45th and 77th place, respectively. Gerard turned in a 225 (74-78-73), while Wetterich tallied a 240 (78-83-79).
The Blue and White will return to the course when they head to Madison, Wisc. to take part in the Badger Invite from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1. Results and recaps from the tournament will be provided at GoXavier.com at the conclusion of each day.
