Men's Golf Tied For Ninth Place After Day One Of The Fighting Irish Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Junior Korey Ward (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) is tied for 19th place and the Xavier men’s golf team sits tied for ninth place after day one of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic played on Monday.
Playing at the Warren Golf Course (par-71, 7,023 yards), the Musketeers dropped 14 strokes between first and second rounds. Finishing with a 291 after round one, XU dropped in the second round, carding a 305. Their performance placed them in a tie for ninth in the field of 13 teams.
Ward shot an even-par 71 in the first round, but turned in a 4-over 75 in round two to card a 146 after 36 holes.
Yuki Kato (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) registered and even-par 71 in the opening round, followed by a 7-over 78 to finish day one tied for 35th place with a 149. Tanapol Vattanapisit (Rayong, Thailand/The Pendleton School), who sits in a tie for 35th place, shot a 3-over 74 in the second round after turning in a 4-over 75 in round one.
Matt Gerard (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Matt Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS) round out the Musketeer scoring, as they sit tied for 53rd place and 76th place, respectively, after day one. Gerard shot a 74 and 78, while Wetterich carded 78 and 83 in rounds one and two.
All five Musketeers will return to action Tuesday morning for the third and final round.
