CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. - The Xavier men’s golf team registered a third round 301 and took fifth place at the 2014 BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship presented by NEW YORK LIFE at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.

Tuesday was the final of three rounds played at the BIG EAST Championships, which saw nine teams and 45 players compete for the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.

St. John’s  (290-295-297/882) claimed its first BIG EAST title since the 1989 season behind the stellar play of its top-three golfers - Ryan McCormick, Ben Ludlam and Dylan Crowley – while all five Red Storm players placed in the top 30. McCormick, who took the individual crown (71-71-69/211), helped St. John’s lead the team standings from day one. The crown is the Red Storm’s 10th team title, while McCormick’s individual championship is the eighth by a St. John’s player.

Marquette (892) finished 10 strokes behind St. John’s and DePaul (899) was third. Fourth, fifth and sixth place was separated by just three strokes. Georgetown (908) took fourth, Xavier (314-295-301/910) and Seton Hall (911) rounded out the top six.

Butler (939), Villanova (954) and Creighton (957) rounded out the tournament field in seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively.

McCormick took over the tournament’s individual lead on Monday and his three-under 69 held on for medalist honors. Yuki Kato (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) (77-70-72/219) and Gregory Podufal tied for second with a score of 219 (+3). Marquette’s Brandon Cloete and Georgetown’s Ed McCrossen shared fourth place with a score of 221 (+5).


 

 

DePaul’s Adrian Halimi tallied the low-round on Tuesday (67). The Blue Demon sophomore tied Podufal for the lowest round of the tournament. Podufal’s 67 came on Monday during the second round.

Korey Ward (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) shot an even-par 72 in the final round to take a share of 16th place and Tanapol Vattanapisit (Rayong, Thailand/The Pendleton School) shot 10-over 82 and finished in a tie for 24th place.

John Burger (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS) carded a 3-over 75 in the final 18 holes and placed in a tie for 26th, while Matt Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS) shot 84 on the final day to tie for 37th position.
