CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. - On a perfect day for golf, the Xavier men’s golf team turned in a 314 team score and sit in fifth place after the first 18 holes at the 2014 BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship presented by NEW YORK LIFE at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.
Ben Ludlam of St. John’s fired an opening round 70 (-2) and sits atop the individual leaderboard one stroke ahead of Brandon Cloete (Marquette) and Ryan McCormick (SJU), who are tied for second place (71).
The Red Storm lead team scoring after recording a 290 after 18 holes. St. John’s holds a five-stroke lead over Marquette (295). Seton Hall (305) is 15 strokes off the lead and follows in third place. DePaul (306) is one shot behind the Pirates in fourth. Xavier (314), Georgetown (315) and Butler (316) are all separated by three strokes and are in fifth, sixth and seventh place, respectively. Creighton (321) and Villanova (328) round out the field in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
Yuki Kato (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) finished the first 18 holes with a 5-over 77 to sit in a tie for 14th place. Tanapol Vattanapisit (Rayong, Thailand/The Pendleton School) and John Burger (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS) both registered six-over 78s and own a share of 20th position.
Korey Ward (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) carded an 81 (+9) to earn a share of 31st place, while Matt Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS) rounded out the Blue and White’s scorecard, turning in an 11-over 83 (t-38th).
The second round of the BIG EAST Championships tees off at 8 a.m. on Monday.
