SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Senior men's golfer John Streibich tied a tournament-record with a 63 in the final round on Tuesday to capture the individual title at the 61st Western Intercollegiate Championship. Streibich had a hole-in-one on the par three fifth at Pasatiempo Golf Club on his way to a 54-hole score of 199 - also tying a tournament record. XU finished 10th in the 18-team field.
Streibich's went out in 30 and came into the clubhouse in 33 for his career-best round of 63. The senior used a five-iron for his first collegiate ace on the 194-yard par-three fifth hole. For the tournament, Streibich shot a tourney-best four-under par on the world-famous 6,432-yard, par-70 track.
The 63 helped Streibich out-duel Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul for individual medalist honors. Junhasavasdikul fired a 66 today to finish a stroke back of the individual title, but did lead the Boilermakers to the team championship.
Streibich's previous career-bests were the 66 he fired in the final round of last year's A-10 Championship and the 202, which also came at the A-10 Championship. His ace was Xavier's first in tournament competition since Jason Kokrak's in the 2003 season.
Purdue (849), California (864), Fresno State (866), Washington (867), San Diego (868) and Long Beach State (868) rounded out the top-five of the 16-team field. Xavier finished in a tie for 10th with Hawaii at 872 (291-286-295).
Xavier returns to action April 9 and 10 at the Palisades Intercollegiate in Charlotte, N.C.
