Men's Golf Takes 13th Place at Talis Park Challenge

NAPLES, Fla. — The Xavier University men's golf team finished in 13th place at the 2014 Talis Park Challenge on Monday, Mar. 17, at The Talis Park Golf Club in Florida.
The Talis Park Golf Club plays to a par-72 layout and a length of 7,025 yards. Designed by Greg Norman and Pete Dye, the acclaimed Talis Park course is one of only two in the world created by the distinguished partnership. Golf Digest recently named the course one of the top-20 in Florida.
Vanderbilt’s Carson Jacobs (70-73-72/215) and Austin Peay’s Marco Iten (73-73-69/215) were co-medalists of the event, while the Commodores (283-289-299/871) took home the team championship with runner-up Wichita State (288-304-298/890) finishing 19 shots behind.
Yuki Kato (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) shot a 3-over 75 on the final day to finish in a tie for 33rd place with a two-day score of 232 (78-79-75). Freshman Matt Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle HS) fired rounds of 78, 81 and 81 to grab a share of 54th place.
Sophomore Matt Gerard (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) saved his lowest score of the even for the third round, turning in a 5-over 77 (84-80-77/241) to take 58th place. Junior Tanapol Vattanapisit (Rayong, Thailand/The Pendleton School) registered a 246 (78-85-83), good for 65th place
Junior Korey Ward (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) shot 78 and 80 in the first two rounds, respectively, but had to withdraw from the event due to injury.
The Musketeers will have two weeks off as they prepare for the Memphis Intercollegiate set to begin Monday, March 31 at the Colonial Country Club. XU will be a part of the 14-team field that includes Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Belmont, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Dayton, Georgetown, Louisiana, Missouri State, Oakland, South Alabama, Western Kentucky, UMKC and tournament host Memphis.
