HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Senior John Streibich carded a final-round 71 on Sunday to lead the Xavier men's golf team to a top-five finish at the 2007 Mission Inn Collegiate Invitational in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The host Musketeers improved their position each round of the tournament and posted an 885 for the 36-hole event on the Mission Inn's El Campeón Course.

Xavier finished in a tie for fifth with Old Dominion, while Louisville closed out the team title with a 293 on Sunday. The Cardinals posted a 36-hole score of 860, which was 14-strokes clear of second-place UNC-Greensboro. Wichita State and Marquette (882) finished tied for third in the 16-team field. The individual medalist was Marquette's Mike VanSickle, who carded a 74 on Sunday and a four-under-par 212 for the tournament.

"I was really happy with how we fought today," said head coach Doug Steiner. "We kept ourselves in contention and improved our position each round of the tournament. It was great to see our guys grind out a top-five finish against a quality field and a quality course."

Streibich's one-under 71 was the second-best round of the day, helping XU move from ninth place to a tie for fifth on the tournament's final day. He carded rounds of 71-74-71 on the weekend to ensure his fifth top-10 this season. Just seven of the 87 golfers in the field were in red numbers on Sunday on the par-72, 6,923-yard El Campeón track.

"It was good to see John get himself a top-10 finish," said Steiner. "This was a tough course; especially the way it was set up today and his 71 was right up there in the best rounds today."

Jason Kokrak shot a 74 today and his 220 (75-71-74) score was good for a tie for 22nd. Josh Hedge (75 on Sunday) was four strokes back in a tie for 33rd. Brian Keating (78-73-76=2) was tied for 45th, while Alan Glynn (80-73-75=231) was tied for 49th.

Andy Connell (75-75-79=229) led a group of five Musketeers playing individually in a tie for 53rd. Kieran Lovelock (230, 55th) carded a 74 today after back-to-back 78's yesterday. Bryan Alred (234) was tied for 69th; Michael Beausejour and Kyle Hodges (235) were tied for 71st.

The Musketeers, who have finished in the top five four times in 2006-07, return to action March 19-20 at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. on the world-famous Pasatiempo Golf Club.

"We improved each round and that was a goal we had for this trip," said Steiner. "Hopefully we can keep it going next week at Pasatiempo."
