Feb. 12, 2011
TAMPA BAY, Fla. - The Xavier men's golf team faced Marquette in the fourth round of The Match Play held at the par-71, 6,898-yard TPC Tampa Bay. DePaul University and the University of South Florida co-hosted the event that featured 16 teams primarily from the BIG EAST conference, including No. 27 Notre Dame. Kennesaw State were the champions.
XU faced Marquette in the consolation final round, defeating the Golden Eagles 3-2. Sebastian MacLean finished 2 and 1 over Kelly Kretz, Peter O'Neill finished 3 and 2 over Corey Konieczki and Chris Burger went 7 and 5 over Matt Haase. Alan Glynn was defeated 3 and 2, while Aaron Siekmann was bested 1up.
The Musketeers won their first two matches against DePaul and Connecticut, before dropping to Ball State. In the first round, MacLean and Burger won both of their matches while Glynn tied. In the tiebreaker, the Musketeers were able to advance to face Connectiut and move into the top eight.
XU soundly defeated UConn, 4-1. MacLean went 6 and 4, O'Neil was 2 and 1, Burger was 4 and 3, while Siekmann went 3 and 1. Not all teams were able to finish their second round matches on Friday, so the Musketeers were unsure as to their third round opponent, the winner of Ball State and St. John's.
Ball State ended up winning their match to face the Musketeers Saturday morning. MacLean was the only Musketeer to claim a victory, going 3 and 2 over Ball State's Eric Steger. With the loss, XU went to the consolation round.
Xavier now takes a month off before returning to play at the Pinehurst Invitational, March 11-13. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com
