Ending The Year On A High Note
CINCINNATI - Xavier got some key contributions from the reserves and was led by a strong performance by senior Kevin Frey in a 68-59 victory over visiting Siena on Monday in front of 9,879 fans at the Cintas Center. "We got a big lift from some of the guys off the bench again," said Xavier head coach Thad Matta. "We told the guys that this was a good team win. We didn't play very well, but we'll take the win and head into the Atlantic 10. What I liked most tonight is that guys made plays down the stretch when they needed to." Frey (Chicago, Ill./Maine West H.S.) led the Musketeers (8-3) with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field including 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Junior forward David West (Garner, N.C./Garner H.S./Hargrave Military Academy) had 19 points of his own including 11-of-14 from the free throw stripe to go along with nine rebounds for Xavier. West now has 1,121 career points, which moves him into the "Top 25" all-time in Xavier history, and 732 career rebounds, which puts him in the "Top 10" in XU history. Xavier also had double-digit scoring from sophomore Romain Sato (Central African Republic/Dayton, Ohio/Dayton Christian) with 11 points on the strength of three second half three-pointers. The Musketeers outshot Siena 39.6% to 36.4% from the field. Siena (4-10) was led by Dwayne Archbold's 31 points and nine rebounds, but failed to have another double-digit scorer. Tonight's game was Xavier's final non-conference game of the season. XU will begin its Atlantic 10 schedule at rival Dayton on Saturday at UD Arena with a noon tipoff.
