The X’s and O’s
• Xavier, 9-0, jumped out to a 14-2 lead at Cincinnati on Saturday, December 13, on its way to a 39-25 halftime lead. UC closed to within three points with eight minutes left in the second half but XU pulled away at the end to record a 10-point, 76-66, win over its crosstown rivals.
• Xavier junior Derrick Brown and senior C.J. Anderson each recorded “double-doubles” in scoring-rebounding in the UC win. Brown had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Anderson had 17 and 11.
• Xavier Musketeers, 9-0, are now seventh in both the Associated Press Poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll this week. XU moved up from 10th in last week’s AP Poll, while XU moved up from ninth last week to a tie with Gonzaga for the seventh spot in this week’s ESPN/USA Today poll.
• Xavier’s 9-0 start is the second-best start in Xavier history and the best since the school-record 10-0 start of the 1996-97 season. XU’s 9-0 start is the best start ever under fifth-year head coach Sean Miller.
• Xavier fifth-year head coach Sean Miller picked up his 100th career win on December 3 against Auburn. Miller is 102-39 (.723) in five seasons at the helm. Miller has moved into third place on XU’s all-time wins list for head coaches.
• Xavier and Duke have played three times with two of those meetings coming in the NCAA Tournament. Duke leads the series 3-0, including a 66-63 come-from-behind win over Xavier in the 2004 Atlanta Regional Final.
• Xavier is playing the second of three games this season against teams from the ACC. XU defeated Virginia Tech, 63-62 in overtime, in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Semifinals in November and will play at Virginia on January 3. XU defeated UVA 108-70 last season.
• Xavier is one of only nine schools that have made the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight multiple times in the last five years: North Carolina (3), UCLA (3), Kansas (3), Memphis (3), Xavier (2), Louisville (2), Texas (2), Florida (2) and Connecticut (2). XU made its third straight NCAA appearance in 2008. XU has won at least 20 games in three straight seasons and 11 times in 12 years.
