The X's and O's
Tuesday night's game is Throwback Jersey Night for the Xavier Musketeers, who will be wearing uniforms that are replicas of the ones that Xavier wore as members of the old Midwestern Collegiate Conference (first known as the Midwestern City Conference when XU joined for the 1979-80 season and was renamed the Horizon League after XU left). Xavier has not met Detroit since the 1994-95 season, the last of 16 seasons for the Musketeers as members of the MCC. XU won eight MCC Regular Season and six MCC Tournament championships in its 16 years as an MCC member. The XU jerseys tonight and the game tickets sport the old Musketeer "running man" logo that XU retired in favor of its current logo marks prior to the 1996-97 basketball season.
This is the 94th meeting between Xavier and Detroit. XU met Miami (Ohio) for the 94th time earlier this season. The only other opponent XU has played more often is Dayton (141).
Xavier, 6-1, has won three straight games and is ranked 24th in this week's Associated Press Poll. The last time Xavier was ranked in the Associated Press "Top 25" was when it finished 12th in the 2002-03 final regular season poll. XU was ranked as high as 10th that season by AP, including the preseason poll and the March 5th poll.
Xavier's 6-1 start is its best since starting 6-1 in the 1997-98 season. XU lost its eighth game that season. XU started the 1996-97 season at 10-0.
Senior forward Justin Doellman became the 42nd member of Xavier's 1,000 Point Club on Saturday. He has 1,008 career points after his team-high 18 points versus Western Carolina.
Senior forward Justin Doellman, who led XU in rebounding as a sophomore and a junior, is leading the team again this season at 7.7 rpg.
Stanley Burrell, a junior guard, leads a balanced Xavier attack at 12.6 ppg. Burrell led XU in scoring as a sophomore and a junior. Junior forward Josh Duncan is second at 12.0 ppg., while senior forward Justin Doellman is at 10.1 ppg. Senior forward Justin Cage is fourth at 9.4 ppg. while standing second on the team in rebounding at 5.9 rpg. following his "double-double" with 10 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday.
Junior guard Drew Lavender leads Xavier in assists at 3.7 apg. after dishing out a season-high six assists in the Western Carolina win. Lavender scored 13 points and dished off five assists in the Miami win last Wednesday.
